WINTER DRIVING · DECISION GUIDE

Should You Rent a Car in Hokkaido in Winter?

A rental car can unlock rural Hokkaido, but winter driving is not the right choice for every traveler. Use this guide to decide based on your experience, route and conditions—not just convenience.

Short answer
If you have little or no experience driving on snow and ice, do not treat a winter rental car as the default. Hokkaido Government guidance warns that winter roads require advanced driving skills, and recommends considering schedule changes or public transport when heavy snow or poor visibility makes driving difficult.

Why Hokkaido winter driving is different

Roads can be covered by compacted snow, ice or black ice that may look merely wet. Hokkaido Government guidance says icy surfaces can be about ten times as slippery as dry summer roads. Snowstorms can also reduce visibility suddenly.

Winter driving therefore needs lower speeds, longer following distances and smooth steering, acceleration and braking.
