WINTER DRIVING · FIRST-TIMER GUIDE
Hokkaido Winter Driving for First-Timers
A rental car can make Hokkaido easier to explore, but winter roads are not simply summer roads with snow on them. If you have little or no experience on snow and ice, plan conservatively and be ready to change your transport plan.
1. Assume a dark-looking road may still be frozen
Hokkaido Government guidance warns that roads that look black can be frozen. Bridges, intersections, railway crossings and shaded areas can be especially slippery. Do not judge grip from appearance alone.
2. Ice changes stopping distance dramatically
Official Hokkaido guidance says icy road surfaces can be about ten times as slippery as dry summer roads. Reduce speed early, leave much more space than usual and avoid building an itinerary that depends on summer-style travel times.
3. Avoid sudden inputs
Accelerate, steer and brake smoothly. Sudden braking, acceleration or steering can cause a loss of control on snow or ice. If emergency braking activates ABS, follow the vehicle's instructions and do not assume ABS makes an icy road safe.
4. Visibility can disappear quickly
Snowstorms and blowing snow can sharply reduce visibility. Before departure, check current weather and road information. Hokkaido Government guidance recommends considering a changed departure time or public transport when heavy snow or poor visibility is expected.
5. Give yourself a simpler first winter-driving day
If this is your first time driving on snow or ice, avoid combining a long intercity drive, many sightseeing stops and a fixed arrival deadline. A shorter route, daylight arrival and a backup transport plan give you more room to respond to changing conditions.
6. Check the rental car before leaving
Confirm the vehicle is prepared for winter use and ask the rental company about controls you are unfamiliar with. Know how to operate the lights, defroster and wipers before entering traffic. Keep appropriate winter clothing with you rather than relying only on the heated cabin.
When should a first-timer reconsider driving?
Reconsider the plan when heavy snow, poor visibility or severe conditions are expected, when the route is long and time-sensitive, or when you do not feel confident controlling a car on snow and ice. Trains, buses and transfers can be the better planning choice on some days.
