Hokkaido Winter Road Trip Checklist
Use this before a winter driving day in Hokkaido. Conditions can change quickly, so repeat the weather and road checks each day rather than treating preparation as a one-time task.
Before booking the rental car
- ☐ Decide whether you are comfortable driving on snow and ice
- ☐ Confirm the vehicle is prepared for winter conditions
- ☐ Ask whether the vehicle is 4WD/AWD if your route makes that useful
- ☐ Check roadside-assistance and insurance details
- ☐ Keep a public-transport or itinerary backup option
The evening before
- ☐ Check the latest weather forecast for the entire route
- ☐ Check official road restrictions and closures
- ☐ Review the route for mountain, rural or exposed sections
- ☐ Reduce unnecessary sightseeing stops if the day looks tight
- ☐ Plan to arrive before dark when practical
Before leaving the parking area
- ☐ Clear snow and ice from windows, mirrors and lights
- ☐ Know how to use the defroster, lights and wipers
- ☐ Make sure you have enough fuel for the planned route
- ☐ Keep your phone charged
- ☐ Carry warm clothing even if the car is heated
- ☐ Keep basic winter emergency equipment available
While driving
- ☐ Drive more slowly than you would on a dry road
- ☐ Leave a much longer following distance
- ☐ Brake, steer and accelerate smoothly
- ☐ Watch for ice on bridges, intersections and shaded areas
- ☐ Do not let a navigation app override road closures or local instructions
- ☐ Stop and reassess the plan if visibility or conditions deteriorate
Before a long detour
- ☐ Check whether the alternative road is actually open
- ☐ Recalculate the full driving time
- ☐ Consider daylight, weather and fuel
- ☐ Contact your accommodation if arrival may be delayed
- ☐ Be willing to stay nearby instead of forcing the original itinerary
