WINTER TRAVEL · ROAD CLOSURE GUIDE
What to Do If a Road Closes During Your Hokkaido Trip
A road closure can turn a realistic Hokkaido itinerary into an impossible one. Do not try to preserve the original schedule at all costs. Confirm the restriction with official information, then rebuild the day's plan around the roads and transport that are actually available.
1. Confirm the closure with official information
Do not rely only on a navigation app. Hokkaido Government publishes road restriction information, and national-road information is also available through official road authorities. Check the affected section and current restriction before choosing another route.
2. Do not enter a closed road
Follow road signs, barriers, police and road-authority instructions. A map application may continue to suggest a route even when local conditions have changed.
3. Be careful with detours
A detour that looks short on a map can become a much longer winter drive. Re-check driving time, daylight, weather and fuel before committing to an alternative route. If the detour creates a very long or unfamiliar winter drive, consider stopping or changing transport instead.
4. Contact your next accommodation early
If a closure is likely to delay or prevent arrival, contact the hotel or accommodation as early as possible. Explain that a road closure is affecting your route and ask about late arrival, cancellation or changing the stay. Policies differ by booking and property, so do not assume a refund.
5. Rebuild the itinerary, not just the route
Remove optional sightseeing stops first. A closed road may mean the original destination no longer makes sense that day. An extra night in the current area can be more practical than forcing a long detour.
